Mrs. Hanney's 5th graders took a leap into science by crafting parachutes to explore the wild world of gravity, air resistance, and surface area. Their mission? To design a parachute that would gently deliver a skydiver right onto the bullseye, proving that even in science, landing on target is a real skill!

Parachute Design: A new skydiving business has launched in your town, but they’re struggling to land their skydivers accurately. This is leading to high costs in fees and unwanted landings in people's yards. Your task is to assist them in finding the ideal parachute by designing a prototype that consistently hits the target. Mrs. Unruh's 5th grade science class is eager to tackle this challenge.

It is crucial to emphasize the following: When dropping off your child in the mornings, kindly ensure that your child is safely on the sidewalk before you proceed to drive away. This measure is essential for your child's safety, as accidents can occur in an instant. We appreciate your attention to this matter and encourage you to take a moment to confirm that your child is ON THE SIDEWALK and clear of the vehicle before departing.

Update on our DHS Quiz Bowl Team. Last Friday they competed in the DMESC tournament going undefeated, beating all teams by at least 100 points and winning the Tournament. Altin Kight averaged 12.5 questions per game and in the finals answered an amazing 24 questions. Last Saturday they competed in the Fort Smith Southside Tournament against 28 teams and despite not having two of their starters, they finished 6th with wins over Russellville and Rogers New Tech teams. DES is very proud of these students and their hard work and want to support them. WAY TO GO #LeopardPride

Mrs. Hanney’s class dove into the wild world of Ecosystem Lab Stations this week! The students tackled a variety of tasks while getting their hands dirty in the name of science. They were busy dissecting owl pellets (because who doesn’t want to play with owl leftovers?), constructing food webs that would make even Spider-Man jealous, and mastering science vocabulary like it was a spelling bee on steroids!

Mrs. Hanney’s science classes engaged in a STEM project where students designed a marble maze representing a food chain. After completing their mazes, they showcased their work to fellow students, challenging them to demonstrate the flow of energy by navigating the marble through the correct organisms.
